The place.

Filmbyn takes visitors through full-size sets from films based on books written by the famous Swedish children's book author, Astrid Lindgren. Walk through Ronja's castle, visit Pippi Longstocking's kitchen or peek into Emil's woodshed. You'll also get unique insights into the moviemaking magic, listening to the stories of those involved with the films.



The brief.

Filmbyn wished to complement their unique exhibits with numerous interactive presentations, where those who made the films told the stories behind them.

Content had to adapt to the visitors' languages. A large-scale, curved screen presentation, with customizable scheduling for high/low seasons was desired for the entrance holding area. A number of synchronized projections and displays bridge from the entrance into the main exhibit. A large number of audio channels had to be provided, including staff-managed volume control throughout the building. Content had to be easy to update, while the cost of playback devices had to be kept at a minimum. The whole system, including a multi-purpose conference room, had to be fully automated, allowing the entire system, including all visuals, kiosks, sound, lights and power to be managed and scheduled.

The delivery.

Blocks manages all content, synchronization and automation using a cost effective local area network.

All content is produced and streamed using Blocks, including the interactive kiosks and their language selections. Chromebox players provide cost effective playback of interactive content, video and audio. Players running the interactive kiosks are distributed throughout the building, along with their touch displays and local audio. A WATCHOUT subsystem drives the curved screen pre-show, under command from the Blocks server along with projectors, system power, volume levels and lighting. Contact closure inputs provide some manual overrides, including integration with the emergency and fire alarm systems, turning all displays off in such an event.

The setup

• PIXILAB Blocks Server, small form-factor, Linux-based.
• Wifi network for management, including a number of tablets and staff mobile phones for managing all aspects of the entire system.
• 20 Asus Chromebox players for interactivity, images, video and audio.
• 11 Elo 1502L 15.6" touch screens.
• Dataton WATCHOUT display server playing the film on the curved screen in the pre-show area.
• Several Barco and NEC video projectors, with power and other control from the Blocks server over the network.
• A BOSE ControlSpace amplifier, with zone groups controlled by the Blocks server.
• Two MOXA ioLogic E1214 Modbus I/O moules for contact closure inputs, power control, integration with the KNX-based lighting system as well as the fire alarm.
