The place

Klimahaus Bremerhaven tells the important story of weather, climate and climate-change throughout its 11,500 m2 of exhibitions, showcasing many different climate zones.

The project

Faced with the difficulties caused by the Corona pandemic, Klimahaus urgently needed to move away from their older, interactive stations based on kiosks with physical buttons. All content of the 38 zones was transferred into Blocks, where user interaction was programmed using the Locator feature for indoor positioning and playback. Using a local wifi network, visitors access the content using their personal smartphones. In this way, video and audio playback augments the experience for up to 1000 simultaneous visitors. No "app" is required. A visitor simply

connects to the local wifi and uses the phone's web browser. Standard IT infrastructure is used, based on two PIXILAB Blocks servers – one main and one redundant backup. The web-based production workflow lets on-site staff update content and tweak system functions as needed. Tablets can be used for manual control and overrides, with user interface elements created in Blocks. Finally, with all infrastructure now in place, Blocks provides many opportunities for future enhancements such as display scheduling, projection, lighting and outdoor GPS navigation.

“Blocks helped us make 38 interactive stations accessible from visitors' mobile devices, while also laying the foundation for future expansions.”
